Happy birthday to American painter Mary Stevenson Cassatt!

Born on May 22nd in 1844 in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania, and living until 1926, she spent most of her life in France.

Cassatt was an impressionist, working mainly to create art that illustrated images of women and their lives. She was friendly with the likes of Edgar Degas and Berthe Morisot.

One of her most famous works is Tea, which depicted two women sitting chatting and sipping tea.

She was an avid feminist and was heavily involved in the campaign for the women’s right to vote in the 1910s, and is now renowned as one of America’s most famous artists.
