New Year's Resolutions Crafts for Kids
Ring in the New Year with Creative Resolutions
New Year’s resolutions aren’t just for adults! Kids can join the fun of goal-setting in a way that inspires creativity and self-expression. Crafting is a wonderful way to make resolutions engaging and meaningful for children. It allows them to dream big while bonding with their family over art projects.
Why Teaching Resolutions to Kids is Important
Resolutions can help kids learn valuable life skills like perseverance, goal-setting, independence, and planning. Setting achievable goals early in life will help instill a sense of accomplishment and pride in children.
Adding a creative twist to resolutions makes them feel less daunting for kids. Instead of teaching resolutions as obligations, you can show kids how they are creative opportunities for self-expression.
Benefits of New Year’s Resolutions:
- Building Positive Habits: Resolutions help children take responsibility for their actions and practice self-discipline. They’ll also learn to keep going, even when their goals feel challenging. These habits will help them grow into confident and well-rounded individuals.
- Encouraging Self-Expression: Every goal is unique to each child, reflecting their dreams and aspirations. New Year's resolutions are a way for them to think more deeply about their lives and discover ways to shape their world. It’s also a chance to exercise their imagination while envisioning the upcoming year!
- Making It Memorable: A handmade item is a tangible reminder of a child’s resolutions. Every time they look at it, the excitement of creating something will be brought back, and this will reinforce the importance of sticking to their goals throughout the year.
Fun and Simple New Year Crafts for Goal-Setting
Here are three enjoyable craft projects that introduce goal-setting while encouraging your child’s artistic side:
Vision Boards
- What they are: Vision boards focus less on writing specific goals and more on providing visual inspiration. These are especially great for young children or kids with wide imaginations who have many desires and goals.
- What you’ll need: Magazines or old books, scissors, glue sticks, and a poster board (to paste pictures on).
- How to do it: Help your child cut out pictures or words from magazines that represent a feeling they want to embrace. Design a collage with the cut-outs and paste it onto a board to hang in their room.
Resolution Jars
- What they are: Resolution jars are an interactive way for kids to set and revisit their resolutions. Throughout the year, they can choose a couple of slips of paper and revisit what it says–how is the goal going? Is there something they can change to make it more achievable?
- What you’ll need: Any size jar; decorative items like washi tape, ribbons, or stickers; paper and pens.
- How to do it: Help your child decorate their jar with colorful paper, ribbons, washi tape, or stickers. On small slips of paper, have them write down (or draw) their resolutions for the year. Put them all in the jar and find a place to put it!
Dream Catchers
- What they are: Dream catchers are a whimsical craft that helps kids visualize their New Year’s resolutions and stay inspired. Hanging the dream catcher in their room offers a nightly reminder about their goals.
- What you’ll need: Paper plates, yarn or string; glue or tape; beads, feathers, or other decorations; scissors and a hole punch
- How to do it: Cut the center out of the paper plate to create a hoop. Punch holes around the edge of the plate and help your child weave the yarn or string through the holes to create a web, adding beads and feathers as you go. Attach long pieces of yarn at the bottom of the dream catcher and add beads and feathers for flair. Hang the finished product above their bed!
Celebrating Progress with Creative Crafts
As the year progresses, encourage your child to keep track of the progress they’ve made on their resolutions. Revisiting their resolutions will help them celebrate their accomplishments and develop a sense of pride when they achieve their goals.
Goal Charts
- What they are: Goal charts are a way for kids to track their progress toward milestones. They can encourage check-ins as frequently as you choose.
- What you’ll need: Poster board, markers, stickers
- How to do it: Help your child design a chart with their goals at the top and columns with dates for check-ins (this could be monthly, quarterly, etc). Let them decorate the board and keep stickers near it for them to mark off as they complete their goals.
Memory Boxes
- What they are: Memory boxes are a special place for children to store mementos, notes, and pictures throughout the year.
- What you’ll need: A shoebox or other small container, paint, stickers, colorful paper
- How to do it: Help your child decorate their box however they would like, maybe with their picture or the year on the top. They can use it throughout the year to collect items or pictures that represent how they have worked on their resolutions.
Achievement Medals
- What they are: Achievement medals are handmade medals to celebrate when big goals have been reached. Kids can wear them or hang them up to be reminded of their accomplishments.
- What you’ll need: Air-dry clay, ribbon, paint, glitter, scissors
- How to do it: Work with your child to help them shape medals with the clay. Punch out a small hole near the top of the medal. Allow to dry, then let your child paint the medal, add glitter, and attach a ribbon through the hole.
