Happy birthday to Henri Emile Benoit Matisse, who lived from 1869 until 1954. Born on 12/31/1869, Matisse was a French painter and draughtsman. His use of color, with emphasized flattened forms and decorative patterns, shot him to fame as one of the leaders in modern art.

Matisse studied art at the Académie Julian in Paris. He began his artistic career painting still lifes and landscapes, with some of his most famous works including Blue Pot and Lemon, Woman with a Hat, along with Le Mur Rose, all of which make fun choices for children to try to emulate at art classes for kids.
